Opposition attacks gains decision
The Opposition has attacked the Government's decision to remove restrictions from the export of barley and other feed grains. The Opposition’s Shadow Minister of Agriculture, Sir Basil Arthur, said that the decision was taken without any consultation with feed-grain users, such as poultry and pig producers, who were likely to face higher costs as a result of the action. “If these producers face increased costs, it is only a matter of time before consumers of poultry and pig products will have to pay more,” Sir Basil said. The original 1 restriction I had been applied seven
years ago when there was a shortage of feed-grains, he said. "Since then the situation has become quite complicated and it is unrealistic for the Government to lift suddenly the restriction. The growers ' are to be commended on the export markets they have secured, but the Government must now ensure poultry and pig producers do not suffer as a result.” Sir Basil suggested that the Cereal Grains Advisory Committee should be asked to investigate the problem as an independent body charged with monitoring grain supplies and recommending ■ export levels.
