New procedure for Q.C.s
PA Wellington A new procedure for the appointment of Queen’s Counsel has been announced by the AttorneyGeneral (Mr McLay). Previously, informal approaches had been made through the Chief Justice or the Solicitor-General but in future formal applications would have to be made to the Solicitor-Gen-eral. said Mr McLay. “With an increasing number of lawyers practising as independent barristers and many of the more senior ones wishing to take silk (become a Queen’s Counsel), obvious-
ly a more forma! procedure along the lines fol lowed in the United Kingdom is required." he said. The Chief Justice had agreed that Applications should be made to the So-licitor-General by November 30 each year and that after consultations a list of those to be appointed would be announced before March 31 in the next year. Only rarely would appointments be made outside this procedure. The new procedure would come into effect immediately but for this year applications would be received up to December 31.
