The cow

Sir, — M. R. McKenzie’s question (October 30), “Is Joy Ashford another animal lover?” suggests that the writer is not, but more animal lovers among farmers would mean less cruelty. What causes division between urban and rural communities is the type of presumptuous statement M. R. McKenzie makes about earning overseas funds for the benefit of urban people. Farmers are in it for themselves . . . who’s fooling who? As a farmer’s daugh-

ter, I can categorically state that cows cannot keep flies off their rear ends with their tongues, so they ineffectively wave the pathetic stumps left to them. We tied tails back from contact with milking, and had no trouble with hygiene, but it took time. The S.P.C.A. should look more closely at timesaving methods of modern farming, and more people like Joy Ashford should voice disapproval of cruelty. — Yours, etc,,

NANCY ECCLES. Kaikoura, .
