Tom Scott’s position

Sir, — R. V. Shaw’s reply to J. Nee (November ) reminds me of a story about Anatole France. The latter once told a friend that certain of his relatives had been living on his charity for years. “Don’t say that,” said the friend, “for by saying it you make it untrue.” There is a moral in this story for R. V. Shaw but I doubt that he will see it. From other letters from R. V. Shaw that I have read in both “The Press” and the “Star" and in the “Listener” it seems • that to him freedom of speech and writing is allowable only when what is said and written is something he likes to hear or read. In this he reveals that he himself has the dictator mentality. — Yours, etc.,

E. DAY. November 6, 1980.
