Picton express

Sir, — I took my friend and her family to catch the Picton Express leaving Christchurch at 7.10 a.m. on Thursday, October 30. She could riot catch the same train on Wednesday as .she had been told on Tuesday about 2 pm. that the train was full. The Thursday train consisted of two passenger carriages painted a cheerful green, one luggage van of an off white (?) and a dieselelectric engine. I presume that the full train on Wednesday consisted of the same. Would someone in the railways tell me why an extra carriage could not be put on the Picton Express to enable people to travel more easily and conveniently? With a powerful engine hauling three carriage equivalents, what would be the extra cost in money and fuel of hauling a fourth carriage even for only a few passengers? The Railways should give a service to the New Zealand taxpayer and tourist. — Yours, etc., M. J. PARSONS. October 31, 1980.

[Mr M. C. Hudson, District Traffic Manager of Railways, replies: “On Wednesday, October 29, 1980, passenger accommodation was fully booked on the day previous to travel. As there were not sufficient applications for seats it was not economical to attach an additional car to thei service concerned.”]
