Heavier fines for speeding
PA Wellington Motorists who )>reak the speed limit by substantial amounts will face heavier fines under regulations gazetted yesterday. At present the maximum speeding infringement fine is $49 for driving at up to 24km/h above the limit. There is no bigger fine for higher speeds. Under the new - regulations, which will come into force in 14 days, drivers apprehended while travelling between 35 km/h arid 4C km/h above the limit will be fined $lOO.
For driving between 30 km/h and 35 km/h above the limit, the fine is $BO. A $6O .fine ' will .be imposed on drivers speeding by between 25 km/h and 3C km/h above the limit. The regulations introduce a simpler ladder of fines for less serious breaches of the limit, but the scale of fines is raised only marginally. The new scale of .fines for speed in excess of the limit is: .- . . j 'i:Not more than 10 km/h $10; 1-1-to 15 km/h, $2O; 16 to 20 km/h, $3O; 21 to 25 km/h, $5O.
