New Shell tanker
A new visitor to Lyttelton, the almost new Shell tanker Ebalina. is expected to arrive from Singapore at the week-end. The Ebalina, launched at Chiba, Japan, in October last year, was put into service early this year. With a gross weight of 19,763 tonnes, she has a deadweight capacity of 31,170 tonnes. * :ls ® Tankers in the Middle East are facing a threat from abandoned anchors, according to Lloyd's Register of Shipping. Millions of dollars worth- of anchors, abandoned on the seabed, may pose a threat to some .of the world’s largest tankers, according to Middle East salvage experts. Considerable concern is being expressed in the Gulf over the danger, especially at the entrance to Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia’s biggest oil port, which is said to be littered with old anchors. In spite of the war with Iran, the Government of Iraq has just ordered a 6000-tonne cruise liner from the Finnish shipyard, Wartella Turku. To be delivered in the spring of 1982,. the ship will be capable of accommodating 300 passengers at high standards set by Iraq’s Ministry of‘Transport and Communications.
