Triennial funding for Arts Council?
PA Wellington The Minister for the Arts (Mr Highet) has said that he intends to put before the Cabinet a plan for funding the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council on a three-year cycle of funding. .. ; . Speaking during an Estimates debate, Mr Highet had. been replying to points put by the member for Western Hutt (Mr J. J. Terris), who had urged Mr Highet to put the council’s funding on this footing. ■ Mr Terris said the number of people who took an active interest in the arts in New Zealand gave the
lie to the notion that the nation had “a gumboot culture.” He lamented that 376 artists had left the country in the last year either long-term or permanently. The senior Opposition Whip ( Mr J. L. Hunt) said the arts in New Zealand faced "a crisis” unless there was more Government help. Over the last year a third of the council’s money had come from, lotteries. ■ ; , "■ He said that a quarter of 1 per cent, of the gross national product should be set aside for the arts.
