Lukewarm response to cruelty petitions
PA # . » > Wellington ) Parliament's Petitions Committee has given a lukewarm response to two petitions aimed at reducing cruelty to animals. . A petition by the AntiVivisection Society calling for legislation to ban the use of gin-traps was referred to the Government for consideration, as was a petition by the Beauty Without Cruelty Group, signed by 13,315 people, asking for more humane control of noxious animals.
The referral indicates a muted approval of the aims of the petitions. A petition
enjoying the committed’s-full support is generally referred to the Government for favourable consideration. The committee’s chairman, Mr N. H. Austin (Nah Bay of Islands), said the committee had inspected a variety of alternative . devices for the destruction of noxious animals. .'lt had concluded there was no suitable alternative to the gin-trap. A petition by John Freeman Hunt and 700 others, calling for corporal punishment for certain types of violent crime, was rejected by the committee. Mr. Austin said that after
considering the matter, the committee had no recommendation to make.
