; Election to Life Memberjship of the New Zealand ; Society of Accountants is a 'rare honour. At any one | time there can be only 15 (Life Members and with the ; total membership of the ■society standing at 11.411, Iby the end of June, 1980, [this honour has considerable I significance. j At the society’s annual general meeting held in Wellington on Monday evening, Professor T. R. Johnston, of Auckland, and Mr J. A. Valentine, of Dunedin, were elected to life membership. ’ Professor Johnston was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court in 1939. He was admitted as a member of the New Zealand Society of Accountants in 1941 and was granted Fellowship status 10 years later. After seven years in legal and commercial offices, and on military service from 1940-45, Professor Johnston was appointed Lecturer in Accountancy at the University in Auckland in 1946. From 1959 to 1962 he was in Melbourne as Reader in Accountancy at the University. In 1962 he returned to Auckland University and took up the Chair of Accountancy in 1963. He was Head of the Department from 1963 to 1973 and is at present Professor of Accountancy. Professor Johnston was chairman of the Auckland branch committee in 1973. He has served on national committees of the society and was vice-chairman of the board of research and publications for several years. He is now a member of the reconstituted Accounting Research and Standards Board. Mr J. A. Valentine was educated at King’s High School, Dunedin, and the University of Otago. He is a partner in a firm of chartered accountants in Dunedin. For many years he was a part time lecturer at the University of Otago and a society examiner and moderator. Mr Valentine served on the Council of the Society from 1959 to 1969 and was president of the society in 1967-68. He is at present a member of the Accounting Research and Standards Board and the Professional Standards Committee, and has served on other national committees of the society. Mr Valentine was chairman of the society’s Summer School for three years and in 1975 he was chairman of the society’s national convention held in Dunedin.
He is a director of many; public companies, including ) Waitaki N.Z. Refrigerating; 1 Company, Ltd. and Freight- 1 ; ways Holdings, Ltd. i! Mr J. K. Torrance, nfp Christchurch. has beeni elected Treasurer of the New/ Zealand Society of Account-,’ ants. Mr Torrance is an < executive director of Command Services Corporation. Ltd. and has been a member . of the society’s council since 1 1972. <
Mr Torrance has been a; member of the Canterbury Rugby Union for 22 years and was chairman for 15 years, having retired only this year. j He is also chairman of the Sydenham Money Club and is a life member of the Christchurch Football Club. He has been actively involved in the Jaycee organisation and has been senator of this organisation.
