Building trade workers get 13.75 p.c. rise

Industry service pay,, however, will ' be increased by 14.36 per. cent. The building trades settlement reached in Auckland has effectively superseded the electrical contractors’, new award: decided in Wellington last months >•-•. • In that award, electrical tradesmen got a 13.75. per
cent wage rise, but other workers’ pay moved by only the statutory. 13.5 per cent. The Engineers’ Union, representing about , 20,000 metalworkers, is believed to be seeking . a minimum movement of 14 per cent. The effect of the building trades settlement is to increase the hourly rate of an indentured tradesman from 412.6 c to 488.1 c over ordinary time. Certificated tradesmen under the new terms will receive 506.4 c an hour in place of the present 428.1 c. The building industry for the first time this year has put provision for domestic leave in its award.
