Restricted bridges on decline
Parliamentary reporter There are now only 55 restricted bridges on main roads in New Zealand, compared with 66 a- year ago, but 15 of them are on the-West Coast and-a fur-, ther nine in north and central Canterbury. The Director of Reading (Mr F. A. Langbein) said it was a big. problem that half the national total of restricted bridges were in .■the Ministry of Works dis- - trict administered from Christchurch, because no one district office had the staff to cope.i with .so; many < restricted.(bridges as quickly -as.- was desirable.’ r- ’ '.He .'.was' '.replying 'to., comment's by members of: the National Roads Board that although the situation was better, progress was still not as great as it should be.
