These three “Practical Puffin” books, published by Penguin Books, Ltd, are well named because they contain many down-to-earth new ideas about popular hobbies with lots of pictures to show you how to follow them.
“Exploring.” Everybody has a natural curiosity to find out more about interesting places. The book is not about exploring space, Antarctica or Mount Everest, but your own environment and the many interesting things to be found in your home garden and in the neighbourhood where you live. “Cooking.” Food is always an interesting subject. The book tells you how to make a variety of different every-day things — sweet, savoury, bread, jam, pancakes, ice-cream and even cheese. “Presents.” Someone you know is sure to be having a birthday soon.
and Christmas is not too far off for you to be thinking about making gifts. The book has suggestions to help you to match the right gift with the person you have in mind — grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters and even the dog. There is nothing like a pop-up book for light entertainment. This “antique” was published first in 1884 by J. F. Schreiber of Esslingen, Germany. “The Great Menagerie.” With the original famous three-dimensional pictures and a new text written in amusing verse by Anthea Bell, published by Penguin Books, Ltd. The book pops up to reveal six entertaining scenes from a travelling zoo, a form of entertainment popular towards the end of last century. The acts are described in verse.
