N.Z. staff withdrawn
PA Wellington The Fletcher-Mainzeal-Fa-renz consortium had decided to withdraw its New Zealand and Filipino housing project workers from Bagdad, the Acting Prime Minister (Mr Maclntyre) said yesterday. The six New Zealanders and 64 Filipino workers had been given exit permits, and would leave Iraq for Jordan by road, he said. Mr Maclntyre, who emphasised that the project team was in no particular danger, said that Fletcher’s had not asked for the Government’s assistance.
The Filipino contingent will be flown to Manila, but according to Mr Bruce Connor, - general manager of Fletcher’s overseas division, the New Zealanders will be flown to Bahrain.
Mr Maclntyre said that the decision to withdraw the workers from the Iraqi Air Force construction sites had been made in view of the likelihood that the Gulf war would be prolonged.
The team could not work on the project, and might not be able to for some time, he said. It was believed that work would resume on the contract when tire position stabilised.
