Mayoress an issue
Sir, — Your correspondent, Edward Day. (September 23) missed the point. For a long period, the ; wife of the elected Mayor,- or some woman nominated by him, has acted as Mayoress performing those functions more appropriate to a woman than a man. Admittedly this office is traditional, but of long standing. There ’ is no equivalent by tradition or statute for the-husband of a Mayor. Accordingly , there is no valid role for Mr Clark if his wife should be elected Mayor — unless he intends to act as Mayoress. .—- Yours, etc., MATTHEW J. GLUBB. October 5, 1980.
