Exchange, directory ready
The new Lincoln exchange and the 1980 edition oi the Christchurch and districts telephone directory will both officially come into use on Friday. The new exchange is larger and will provide residents with subscriber toll dialling. Telephone cables in the area are also being improved. The Post Office’s regional engineer for equipment, Mr A. Holland, said that the introduction of the exchange and the directory were timed to coincide. .
Japanese -equipment is replacing British in two Christchurch suburban telephone exchanges, Lin* wood and Hillmorton, The. British exchanges were modular, and would be split and added to others, said Mr Holland. The new crossbar exchanges were of bigger capacity. Both are being changed over in stages. The work is expected to be completed some time next year.
