End of the gardens

In the final of “The English Garden." tomorrow on Network One. Sir John Geilgud looks at the vast formal gardens of the Victorian era, and the smaller, more manageable gardens of today. Beautiful though they were, the big formal gardens were difficult to maintain after the First World War, although a few new ones were made. It was the sudden explosion of the suburbs in the 1930 s that led to our gardens of today, and the general design does not seem to have changed in the last 40 to 50 years. “The English Garden,” hosted by Sir John Geilgud, is a Thames production. Next week in the ■ same time slot is the one-off programme, “The Making of Xanadu,” which takes a look at the making of the recently-released film, “Xanadu,” starring Olivia New t o n-John, Michael Beck, Gene Kelly, and Jeff Lynn.
