“The Smallest Pawns in the Game” is the title of the book Peter Townsend compiled as he travelled : jthe ’ world during the International Year of the . Child last year collecting • the stories of hundreds of children who had suffered in the wars and persecutions of modern times. He talks on “8.8. C. World of Books” on the Concert programme at 7 p.m. ■ about the dignity of the refugee children he met. * * * The author of earlier books about his work as a “zoo doctor," David Tay* lor, has written a further one called “Going Wild.” He is asked on “8.8. C. World of Books" whether he really got to know his patients, how dangerous they could become, and why zoos are important for wild-life today. St * # The books programme also has a segment on Solzhenitsyn’s latest book, “The Oak and the Calf.”
The title refers to the Russian tale of a young calf trying to knock down an oak tree. The book is compiled from .the notes and journals of the seven years before Solzhenitsyn left the Soviet Union. The author’s biographer, Michael Scammell, discusses the book’s irony, and honesty. Our secrecy “In Need of Open Gov* ernment?” is the title of the latest programme in the series examining New Zealand today. Dr I. G. Bertram, lecturer in economics at Victoria University, is also a member of the Coalition for Open Government, and he discusses with Jack Shallcrass the advantages and disadvantages of open government. “Are We Really Like This?”, Concert programme, 9 p.m. Beethoven Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto, the Piano Concerto No 5 in E flat, Opus 73, can be heard from the Concert programme at B.lBpm in a recording made by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Zubin Mehta conducting. The piano soloist is the distinguished Spanish pianist, Alicia de Larrocha.
