Cricket Suburban play begins

Tha first round of th e Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association’s competitions started in cold, damp conditions on Saturday. Belfast won the toss and decided to let Merivale-Papanui have first use of the wicket in their match. After losing carlv wickets. Bill Shierlaw and Ken Stagg came together and advanced the. score to 202 for four before the innings was declared. -? Shierlaw scored the first century of the season with a bright 105 not out. Stagg 37 and lan Marton 34. also batted well. The; most successful Belfast bowler was Terrv Cockburn who had a ! return of two for 36. At stumps. Belfast had lost : five wickets in reaching 106 For Merivale-Papanui, Mark Leigh has taken three for 25. Sumner was put into bat by’ Hoon Hay. After the first wicket! fell with only seven runs on i the board. John Monk 36, and' Tone McKendrv 72 not out, consolidated Sumner’s position and a declaration was made at 156 for four. in reply.
