Sadat foe arrested

NZPA-Reuter Cairo The Egyptian security police have arrested Mohammed Abdel Salam ; Zayyat, a former Deputy Prime Minister and prominent member of the Egyptian Opposition movement, a statement from the Leftwing Unionist Progressive Party has said.

Mr Zajyat was one of about 50 signatories to a series of petitions this year accusing President Anwar Sadat’s Government of setting up what they called a pseudo-democracy. Mr Zayyat, who is 69, in the early 1970 s was secre-tary-general of the Arab Socialist Union, at that time Egypt’s only political party. He later became Deputy Prime Minister but disagreed with Mr Sadat over domestic affairs.
