Smithfield market
The announcement that the EEC Sheepmeat regime had been agreed upon and would be implemented on October 20, resulted in a reduction in supplies of domestic lamb on United Kingdom wholesale markets last week; this led to some firming in home-killed lamb prices on central markets after an initial easing earlier in the week, the New Zealand Meat Board reports. New Zealand lamb offtake was again slow, but could improve next week- in view of the expected further cutback in domestic lamb supplies. On Smithfield Market PL
grade was quoted at 54.0-56 p per lb, and PM grade at 48.5-50 p per lb. The Board says that although domestic boneless (prices improved during the week, inquiry for imported beef remained sluggish. New Zealand cow beef averaged 121 United States cents per lb c.i.f.
Most activity on the Japanese mutton market centered on the sale of small parcels of Australian product. New Zealand traders have been offering small parcels of ML 1 carcase at 73-74 United States cents per. lb c. and f., Japan, for December shipment.
