Zimbabwe beaten
NZPA-Reuter London Zimbabwe failed to use its star Springbok winger, Ray Mordt, until the last move of! the game — too late to save it from a 23-25 defeat by Surrey in the opening match of its English rugby tour in London yesterday. After five minutes of injury time, Mordt ran 30 metres, shaking off two tackles, to score in the corner. The result depended on Frank Inocco’s conversion, but he missed.
Inocco had been in great form earlier, landing three penalties and two dropped goals to keep Zimbabwe in the game. Tries by Ray Smith and Mordt in the closing minutes accounted for the touring side’s other points. The Surrey fly-half, James Thornton, scored 17 of his team’s . points with three penalties, two conversions and a try. Dave Hodgkiss and Richard Sainter also scored tries.
