Local elections
Sir, — In opening the Labour Party’s local body campaign, Mrs Clark' promises that Labour will close the Bexley tip by 1983. I have before me a Labour Party advertisement which appeared this time three years ago. Among the “positive policies” they listed for Pegasus was . “Closure of the Bexley »tip within three years.” That sort, of promise helped the Labour Candidates to gain all four seats in Pegasus and the ward lost the services of Peter Dunbar who had done so much for the area; 'Mrs Clark and her team, blinded by their political aspirations and like their associates in the Beehive, are. buzzing around .Ippking , for ._ some, .sweet
sounding promises t.o get them into power. I hope voters judge candidates on their individual merits, and not by party affiliations. •— Yours, etc.',’ .... ,'. TERRY DOWNEY. September 25, 1980,
Sir, — A pamphlet left in my letter box urges me to, at . the coming municipal elections, return ;Mr, Hay.-and his Citizens’ Council to office. As an aim, the brochure mentions keeping rates “at a reasonable level.” Mrs Mollie Clark contends that under . the Citizens’ Council, the average rate in-, crease was 25.6 per cent. Mine was 50 per cent. And if returned, I wonder what further magnificent civic edifices the council plans to erect? And what will be the cost to the ratepayers of the Royal reception at the opening of the opulent new council offices? The Citizens’ Council. comprises mostly business and professional people/ Have they ’forgotten that thousands of their ratepayers are struggling along on superannuation and unemployment benefits? — Yours, etc.,
S. Li DONALDSON. September 24, 1980.
