Oppression
5 Sir, — The recent decision by the Broadcasting Corporation not to screen the film “Death of a Princess”' was, we assume, to prevent offending the Saudi Arabians. Accounts appear from time to time of executions of females for adultery by stoning to death and firing squads in Arabia and Iran. Add to this the barbarous practice of female circumcision, in particular the ’ Pharaonic version as used in black Muslim countries plus their total subjection of the female and we have a situation surely worse than apartheid. Our sixwoman delegation .to the U.N. Conference on Women at Copenhagen were the first to stand up and be counted on these issues and yet in our country no voices are raised. We in- New Zealand cannot close our eyes in one direction because of vital trade links and at the same time come, down hard on South African rugby. Double standards are not on. — Yours, etc.,
A. R. CODLING. September 23, 1980.
