Feed shortages reflect in uninteresting sale
Only better quality yearlings and adult steers came close to maintaining recent rates during a special store cattle sale at Addington yesterday.
The sale was not followed with much enthusiasm, probably because of general feed shortages in North and MidCanterbury. Only a small percentage of the 752 yearlings offered were of top quality. Some of the best lines sold at rates close to last week but the bulk cf the yarding was between $lO and $2O behind recent sales.
Some very light dairy-bred yearlings from the West Coast sold realised between $2B and $35. A feature of the yearling sale wad the 34 Hereford-Angus-cross steers and heifers offered by H. C. and C. G. C. Abbott (Southbridge). These sold between $l9O and $232. The price levels for adult store cattle were about right for the beef fattener, several observers said.
Values eased slightly from the last week, especially for two-year steers. Over-all tie market was cheaper by about $5 to $B.
The quality in the yarding of 704 adults was generally good. Several lines of two-year-old Angus and Anguscross steers caught the eye and competition was strong. A . well-grown three-year Simmental bull interested several fatteaers and bidding reached $B6O for the animal.
