>A ‘ Auckland Freezing workers yesterday promised “one of the most chaotic seasons for many years” if the Southdown works close. The pledge was issued in Auckland after a meeting of union officials set in train a campaign to keep the 76-year-old works open. The officials said that "action would be taken to prevent the season starting in the normal way” if the Government and the
Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Co-operative did net keep the works open after the stated close-down date of October 17. The c o-operative declined to comment on the union’s ultimatum. Yesterday’s meeting of the Auckland Freezing Workers’ Union executive was also attended by the advocate for the freezing workers’ national award. Mr A; J. Kennedy, of Christchurch, and the Auckland secretary of the
Freezing Industry Clerical Officers’ Union, Mr M. J. Haliday. The assistant secretary of the Auckland union, Mr J. R. Evans, said the meeting recommended to its works branches that action be taken, if the works closed, to prevent the new lamb season getting off to its usual start. An example of the action, he said, might be bans on the hiring of seasonal labour “and any other action deemed necessary.”
