Call for college reprieve
PA Hamilton A call -to delay the phasing out of North Shore Teachers’ College to give it a chance to state its case, has been made by the Association of University Teachers. The national president, Dr David Mitchell, said he was concerned about the way in which the Government had gone about its decision to phase out teacher education at the college next year, to use the college for Auckland Technical Institute courses. “On a matter of such magnitude there should have been wide consultation with the staff of the college and with others involved in teacher education,” Dr Mitchell said.
“At the very least there should be a stay of execution to allow the college to put its case for a meaningful role in pre-service and inservice teacher education." Dr Mitchell said it was one thing to try to rationalise resources, but another to do so without exploring other ways the college’s considerable teacher education resources could be used in future.
