The latest Newz
The Newz, the popular Christchurch rock group, have been approached by Michael Gudinski, who runs the Australian record label, Mushroom Records. Phil Jones, the lead guitarist for The Newz, said that Mushroom Records was very interested in recording the band and also releasing their debut album, “Heard The Newz.” “At the moment quite a few Australian record companies are interested
in the band. A lot of companies had options on the album,” he said. Michael Guditiski intends to listen to the band in Christchurch some time next month, en route to or from the United States. The Newz had considered going to Australia in November, but on the advice of Richard Wilde, a good friend of the group, had decided to wait until February, Phil Jones said. The reasons were that from November until
Christmas many venues were already pre-booked, and accommodation was also difficult to find. However, if an Australian record company or promoter offered a record contract and organised a tour in Australia, the band would go before February, he said. Gudinski had also expressed interest in recording a new Newz album, and Phil Jones said that the group had plenty of material with seven new
songs organised and another three in the pipeline. All the band were helping composing songs, and the band was “a lot better now,” he said. When “Heard The Newz” was recorded, Tony Rabbett and Brad Coates had just joined the band. “We are really looking forward to doing another album, and are hopeful of getting Eric Johns as producer again,” Phil Jones said.
