Last refugees leave mission
NZPA-Reuter Havana ,The ; 144-day occupation of the United States diplomatic mission in Havana by Cuban refugees ended yesterday when the last 11 surrendered to the Fidel Castro Government.
More than 400 people, mainly former political prisoners. had taken shelter in the building last May 2 after fighting outside it with thousands of Castro supporters.
The last nine men and two women filed silently from the front door to a Cuban Foreign Ministry bus and
were driven away past about 60 jeering onlookers. Wayne Smith, head of the United States mission, welcoming the refugees’ departure, told reporters that so far as he knew none of those who had previouslysurrendered had been mistreated or jailed, and it was expected that they would all eventually be allowed to leave Cuba.
The mission, a section of the Swiss Embassy representing United States interests, has been ringed by Cuban troops since the May 2 melee, with access restricted to diplomats.
