Increased log trade forecast
PA Wellington An improvement in the log trade with Japan could not be expected before next April, said the president of the Owens Group, Ltd, Mr R. A. Owens, yesterday. A pioneer in the stevedoring of logs — he is at the end of his twentythird year in the trade — Mr Owens said that once ships stopped coming, it took three to four months to get them going again. The present cessation in trade had resulted from an increase in American exports, mainly of trees damaged in the Mount St Helens eruption. He had just returned from Japan and the log-handling areas of the ports of Osaka and Kobe were packed with ships waiting to unload the American logs. He was sure that the trade with Japan would pick up again once the supply of eruption-dam-aged trees was exhausted, because the need for logs always existed in Japan.
