Alcohol abuse
Sir, — The reported remarks of Dr W. J. Gwynne (September 18) regarding the epidemic of alcohol abuse is further evidence of the need for stricter control. Jugs obviously encourage more liquor to be consumed. Dance bands also cause much distress and annoyance to residents in the vi= cinity of hotels, such as the Aranui, for example. Bands are used to encourage increased consumption of liquor,, for brewers’ financial gain. The cost to the . taxpayer for alcohol abuse and related diseases should be the Government’s greatest concern. Yours, etc., '? ' L. W. HOBBY. September,2o, 1980.
Sir, -— When we start ’looking at the size of a container of alcohol as the cause of alcohol evils, our priorities are seriously in question. .The Government recently, arid rightly so, refused a higher “take” to the Liquor Advisory Board. A very, good case can be made for its abolition. In the field of alcoholic recovery 7, and education in the use of alcohol there is no place for theorists and prima donnas. — Yours, etc., J. C. O’LEARY. September 21, 1980.
