Experiments using animals

Sir, — It is refreshing to hear of a member of Parliament who is genuinely interested in the welfare of animals in New Zealand and overseas. As Mr Moore has mentioned, animals are exploited in many wavs around the world and 'in many cases the results of horrendous r esearch bring forth no useful or relevant enlightenment. We are casually assured that laboratory, animals are hygenically housed, surely the animals would rather be alive and dirty than hygenically dead. As no doubt those whq .want to, will

know ,a number of animals are reported as being used for research including pigs, bears, rabbits, rats, cats, dogs, sheep, and monkeys, to name only a few. A delightful justification is to say that these animals do not experience pain. I wonder if persons murmuring these words have tried housing electrodes in their own brains as monkeys in France are forced to have. — Yours, etc., (Miss) J. TYLER. September 18, 1980.
