Canterbury players in soccer trial
Five Canterbury players have been included in the combined southern and central region soccer team to meet the northern region next Saturday in the final trial to select the national under-19 squad. The five, Neil Caswell, lan France, Hans Kuipers, Steven Haworth and Mike Poole, have good prospects of making the New Zealand squad to compete in the world youth championship qualifying matches at the end of this year and early in 1981.
Mr Allan Jones, the national director of .. coaching and selector-coach of the under-19 team, expects to announce the New Zealand
squad at the end of next week. The combined SouthernCentral region team for the match, which will be played in Waitemata, includes four players, France, Ceri Evans, Glen Kelly and John van Helden, with national league experience. The team is: Neil Caswell (Shamrock); lan France (Rangers), Ceri Evans (Newmans Nelson United), Bruce Duncan (Wellington), Hans Kuipers (Christchurch United); Francis Phelan (Petone), Paul Bardwell North End United), Steven Haworth (Nomads United); Glen Kelly (Manawatu United), John van Helden (Gisborne City), Mike Poole (Woolston).
