Grey Way records fiftieth win in Orari second leg

By

W.R. CARSTON

Grey Way capped off a memorable day for patrons at Orari yesterday, when he came up with one of his peak performances to carry off the honours in the Derrick Gould Handicap and notch up his fiftieth victory in the colours of his South Canterbury breeder, Mr Peter South.

Although Grey Way’s re* markable string of victories have been achieved on courses from as far north as Ellerslie, to Wingatui in the south, only, twice before had he been successful at Orari. But it was fitting that his half-century should come up on the course, for his owner

is a vice-president of the Geraldine Racing Club. Some might have assumed that once the “Washdyke Wonder” had reached that magical 50-mark his connections would have had thoughts of retiring him. But after yesterday’s race nothing was further from the minds of Peter South or Pat Corboy, who has prepared

thu durable grey — he is almost white now — for all of his racing. “There won’t be any more of those long trips away to the "big time” in the future but as long as he’s fit and as healthy as he is now we’ll keep him going and sort the races out,” said Mr South. At 10 Grey Way is naturally beginning to show his

age but he certainly does not act like a veteran and although he is not racing for “big plums” now the $1625 he earned for winning yesterday took his lifetime earnings to date to beyond the $264,000 mark. “Snooky” Cowan, who has been associated with Grey Way for many of his wins, secured a perfect run for the 10-year-old behind the pace-

making Sharebroker to the straight in yesterday’s race. He was brought out from the trailing position early in the run home and soon put the issue beyond doubt. Grey Way won, running away, by two and a half lengths and Sharebroker saved second from Flying View, a fast finisher from mid-field, by a head. In The Clear held his place in the run home to finish fourth, three parts of a length back, and Hunting Call, which had his chance, led in the others.
