Cook Strait cable soon back on line
PA Wellington Repair work to the No. 3 Cook Strait power cable has been completed and after testing it is expected to be back in action by early October. The cable has been out ©f action since July , when a joint failed at Fighting Bay, the South Island terminal. , ■ Although the joint was repaired a month ago, Electricity - Division staff suspected that other soldered joints in the cable were also faulty. This was found to be the case when a joint at the North Island terminal at Oteranga Bay was opened up. It also showed evidence that the joint was ■ running hotter than expected.
The soldered joint has been replaced with a brazed joint. The highpressure nitrogen gas is now being pumped back into the cable and voltage testing will begin soon. The new joint will undergo careful temperature monitoring because four other soldered joints are still in place on the No. 1 and No. 2 cables. If the problem has been heat, it may be overcome by changing the cooling material round the cable. But an Electricity Division spokesman said that with the No. 3 cable coming back into service, pressure was off staff now and the problem could be carefully examined. The breakdown did not affect supply to the North Island.
