Oil from Norway?
Norway after 1985 could become an exporter of oil to New Zealand. The Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) said he had discussed with the Gov-ernment-owned . oil company in Norway, Statoil, the possibility of modest supplies for New Zealand when two new North Sea fields were developed and producing in five years time.
This alternative to Middle East oil seemed a
real possibility, he said, as by 1985 Statoil would be producing 15 million tonnes a year. He envisaged a possible 10 per cent of New Zealand’s needs coming from Norway — about 400,000 tonnes. But Mr Birch emphasised that no firm arrangement had been made and talks with the Norwegian Government would have to be held before' a deal was worked out.
