F.B.I. probe of leak
NZPA Washington President Carter has ordered the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to find out who leaked existence of the super-secret stealth warplane technology, the chairman of a Congressional panel has said. In a letter to the House of Representatives’ armed services investigations sub-com-mittee, Mr Carter also denied once more that he had any part in disclosure of the Stealth technology, aimed at making American aircraft invisible to enemy radar.
Last week the retired Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, former Chief of Naval Operations, cited unnamed defence and White House officials as saying that Mr Cater personally decided to leak the programme. Ronald Reagan, and Mr Reagan’s Republican allies, have accused the Administration of intentionally leaking information on the technology to deflect criticism of Mr Carter’s defence policies. They have said that the leak gives the Russians as much as 10 years warning to begin countering the new technology. Mr Carter said his letter: “I can and do state unequivocally that neither I nor any member of the White House staff, acting under my direction or authorisation, has engaged in the leaking of classified information concerning the Stealth programme.” I
