Team-mates share title
Two Woodward Cup teammates, Jon Bierwirth and Geoff Black, shared the Canterbury under-21 golf •championship on their home course at Russley yesterday. Both had rounds of 78 and 75 to finish level on 153. It was their second round efforts which enabled the young pair to share the title. Indeed, had Brent Paterson, the defending titleholder, shot a second round 75 instead of a 76, it would have been a three-way championship. Black and Bierwirth, on a three and five handicap respectively, trailed the firstround leader, Chris Pettigrew, of Harewood, by four
shots. But in the afternoon, Pettigrew’s form slumped dramatically, and he could manage no better than an 89 in the second round. The best performance by a golfer from outside Christchurch came from Gordon Smith, of Timaru. Lying second after the morning round, three shots behind Pettigrew, Smith had a second round 80, to finish four shots behind Black and Bierwirth, level with Mark Street on 157. The under-17 championship went to the 14-year-old Russley golfer, David O’Keefe, who followed a first round 82 with 80 in the afternoon for a 162.
