Price up; crowd up
The increase of $1 to $2 a person in admission charges had no effect on the crowd at the Methven Trotting Club’s spring meeting on Saturday. . Gates receipts more than doubled, with the paid attendance being up by some 300 over 1979.
In spite of a breakdown in totalisator equipment early in the day and a loss of 10 to 15 minutes, the meeting finished on time.
Admission charges will be $2 at Ashburton next Saturday, and it is expected that the clubs racing at Addington and Riccarton will follow the lead of the MidCanterbury clubs and announce similar increases in the next day or two. Oncourse betting rose by $43,884 to record $253,927, while the off-course total rose by $57,978 to $501,691.
