Manawatu clinched the national rugby championship in Palmerston North on Saturday, giving a command performance to wallop Bay of Plenty 41-9, and erase any chance of a last-gasp Wellington’s win.
M a n a w a t u raced through the first half to a 25-9 lead after scoring four tries with the help of a strong wind.
Any hope that Wellington had that Manwatu would be beaten was quashed after only two minutes when the winger, Craig Wickes, bolted over in the corner. From that stagey with only periodic Bay of Plenty "disagreements”, Manawatu was dominant in every’ phase of the game. The AH Black utility back, Doug Rollerson, had
a superb game for Manawatu, scoring 21 points to make his total from the last four national championship matches an amazing 72. Scorers: Manawatu 41 (M. Rosenbrook 2, B. Hemara, G. Knight, C. Wickes, tries; D. Rollerson 2 tries, a penalty, five conversions) beat Bay of Plenty 9 (J. Brake, a try; G. Rowlands a penalty and a conversion).
