Sir, — I suggest that David H. Tilling (September 8) is clutching at straws, or even has a political purpose as . . sordid . . .” as my own, for he whitewashes the Filipino situation. On September 21, 1972, President Marcos declared martial law. Seventy thousand have been arrested since that date; many have died or disappeared after arrest; torture is common; Congress is suspended; civil rights are non-existent; there is no free press; Strikes are banned; wages are below survival . level for many; subversion is “going against the Government” (Defence Minister Entile). So Colleen Costello was guilty of . .impassioned extremism . . .”? I rejoice that people can find happiness in secure relationships when all around seems to be crumbling, but the original point still holds.
