Three to cover rally

Radio New Zealand will have a team of three broadcasters with the 1980 Motogard rally, which starts in Nelson tomorrow and will bring some of the best names in world rallying to New Zealand. From Nelson, the event will move south and west to Greymouth and then across the Southern Alps to Christchurch, finishing on Wednesday, September 17.

Two of the reporters, lan Woodley and Brian Kelly, are no strangers to the Motogard: both travelled through the North Island last year and each

season follow the national championship rounds in the Auckland and Waikato districts. The third member of the party is a Wellington technician, Trevor Barker, who can claim at least one trip to Moscow this year. He nearly went back as the senior technician with the Radio New Zealand Olympic broadcasting team, but that is another, unfortunate story. Barker, like Kelly, has had experience driving in a rally and this will prove invaluable in assessing the chances of competitors in the Motogard.

The Community stations of Radio New Zealand will follow the Motogard rally, with network reports every two hours supplementing reports throughout the night on the long stages.

The two-hourly reports will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow and Sunday going through to 8 p.m. On the Monday they will be at 8 a.m. through to midnight, Tuesday 6 a.m. to midnight, and on the final day 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. News will also be carried on the “Today in Sport” programme each day.
