Dr Sullivan dies suddenly
PA Auckland The Very Rev. Martin Gloster Sullivan, K.C.V.0., Dean (Emeritus) of St Paul’s, London, and a former Dean of Christchurch, collapsed and died while speaking at an annual dinner function of the University Club in Auckland late last evening. He was 70. Dr Sullivan was Dean of St Paul’s from 1967 until 1977. Before he was appointed to St Paul’s, he was Archdeacon of London and a Canon of St Paul’s. While he was Dean of St Paul’s, he was also Dean of the Order of St Michael and St George and of the Order of the British Empire.
He w r as Dean of Christchurch from 1951 to 1962. Born in Auckland, he attended Auckland Grammar School and Auckland University. In the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June last year he was made Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. As a clergyman, he received the knighthood but not the accolade. During his tenure at St Paul’s he was sometimes criticised by more staid churchgoers' as being something of a controversialist. During the London run of the stage show “Hair,” he held Conununion at the Cathedral for the cast.
