Top two seeds reach finals
The top . two seeds in the intermediate men’s and women’s j .singles. won through to the finals at: the Yonex New Zealand badminton championships at the Skellerup Hall yesterday, ; In;:the-men’s event the top seed, Stephen Lobb, of Hutt Valley, dropped a game but recovered to beat John Miles, pf Auckland, in . one semi-final, while the No. <2 seed,. Philip Horne, of North shore, was untroubled to beat the fourth seeded John Amairan of Wairarapa.
Toni Whittaker and Karen Phillips, .the No. 1 and 2 players in the women’s singles, advanced to the final with victories over 1 Sharon Henare and' Carol Harris respectively. Two unseeded pairings had chances >to force upset results ini the semi-finals of the intermediate doubles. In the men’s doubles, Michael Lindsay, of Southland, and Lincoln Crawley, from Hutt Valley, led the second seeds, Lobb and Andrew Bayliss, 14-2, in the first' game but collapsed badly to lose 15 successive points.- . ; .
..Miles -and John Lawrence fought-off a determined bid by the Canterbury pair, of Mark Chambers and Mark Reid in 1 the second semifinal. Chambers: and Reid led, 5-0, in the first game but made too many, mistakes at important stages.
The top women’s seeds, Miss Whittaker and Pam .Shepherd, moved into the final with a comfortable win but Miss Phillips and Miss Harris began slowly against the Hutt Valley: pair of Sharon Stevens and Sharon Turner. Misses Stevens and Turner deservedly won the first game but the second seeds quickly recovered and a 7-0 lead in the deciding game endured them of a . place in the-final. Results:—
