Maoris ‘better at school now’
PA Wellington The Maori success rate in School Certificate and University Entrance examinations is increasing, according to the Maori Affairs Department in its annual report table . in Parliament. School Certificate passes by Maori students between 1970 and 1978 had risen from 14.5 per cent to 16.4 per cent, for Sixth Form Certificate from 4.1 per cent to 9.6 per 'cent, and for University Entrance from 2.5 per cent to 4.4 per cent, it said. The drop-out rate of pupils leaving the third and fourth forms without attempting an external examination was declining. In 1970, 40.1 per cent of Maori students had left school before the fifth form but by 1978 this figure had dropped to 2G.1 per per cent,
