Fewer babies born in last June year
PA Wellington i New Zealand’s birthrate! declined in the year ended June 30, maintaining the trend seen over the last few years. Live births totalled 51,273, compared with 51,960 for 1979 and 52,484 for 1978, according to provisional figures.released by the Statistics Department. The annual birth rate per 1000 population was 16.40 for the latest June year, compared with 16.61 for 1979 and 16:77 for 1978. There were 25,755 deaths registered, against 24,886 in 1979 and 25,466 in 1978. The annual death rate per 1000 population was 8.24 in the latest June year. t
The natural increase in population was 25,518, compared with 27,074 the year before, 27,018 in 1978 and 29.169 in 1977. The number of marriages registered fell to 22,832 from 22,927 in 1979, with the corresponding marriage rate per 100 population slipping from 7.33 in 1979 to 7.30 in the year ended June 30.
