Battered women
Sir, — I am tired of John Church being almost exclusively interviewed on the. subject of battered women in Christchurch. He does not mention the Christchurch Women’s Refuge, so it is not surprising that many people think the Christchurch Women’s Refuge and the Battered Wives’ Support Group. are the same. The aims of the two groups are obviously the same, but there any similarity ends. It is true that both groups offer emergency accommodation. We run a refuge for this, whereas Battered
Wives accommodate women and children in private homes, or send them on to us. As this is a patriarchal society no doubt the powers that be find it more acceptable to interview a male on the subject of. 'battered women, , than a helper from the Christchurch Women’s Refuge, which; is a feminist organisation. I Teel > yvery strongly that there should at least be a balance of information from : each ’group whenever the subject of battered women is raised. .— Yours, etc., '“ PAM GILLARD. 1 , September 1, 1980.
