That shot took him’ to 48 not out—and to a total' of 6973 runs in tests, passing Sir Leonard Hutton’s 6971 in 79 tests. The only two batsmen to .have scored more runs were Colin Cowdrey with 7624 and Walter Hammond'with 7249. Lillee removed Boycott’s opening . partner, Graham Gooch with .a .nasty kicking delivery which Gooch pulled weakly to square :leg;\f , He then ./ended Bill Athey's first : test Innings at nine with an off-cutter which took the inside' edge and dislodged the leg bail.
