Japan tops market
NZPA London Imports, mostly from Japan, are expected to take a record 63 per cent of the British car market this month — traditionally the best-selling month of the year. ' Total sales, according to a prediction in the “Daily Telegraph” yesterday, could reach the 215,000 achieved inAugust last year but are expected to fall short of the
250,000 record set in August, 1978.
Japanese . manufacturers, the newspaper said, are expected to outsell both the British big two, State-owned BL, and Ford. Japanese manufacturers, and particularly Datsun, will take the main, share of the market, inspite of their “gentleman’s agreement” to limit market shares to 10 per cent in the interests of harmonious trading between the two countries;
