High emission test failure

About 70 per cent of cars in Christchurch fail exhaust emission tests.

Some cars tested by the Ministry of- Transport exceeded the recomrriended levels by a “considerable amount,” said Mr A. J. Calder, the Ministry’s regional superintendant of .automotive surveying. Only 800 of the 2674 cars checked at the Ministry’s stations in July passed the emission test.

About 42.5 per cent of cars tested failed the carbon monoxide test, 5.5 per - cent failed the hydrocarbon test, and about 22 per cent failed both. •

The’ maximum levels allowed in the analysis of exhaust gas as suggested by

the Ministry of Energy are 800 parts pe.r million of hydrocarbons, and 4.5 per cent carbon monoxide.

Motorists submitting their cars for testing are asked to return a card explaining what was needed to tune the car correctly. Incorrect carburettor adjustment was the main reason for cars failing the tests, Mr Calder said. Idling speed, ignition timing; spark plugs, distributor timing, and air filters were also prominent trouble spots;

Similar results were obtained in tests done by a garage in Christchurch, said Mr Calder. About 2000 cars had been tested in Christchurch so far this month.
